A Guide to WHMIS

If you are employee, you face the risk of being injured in the workplace. Most of these accidents or injuries can be avoided if employees are properly educated and trained. If employees undergo WHMIS training, which is one form of training for employees, they will be able to avoid many workplace injuries.

Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System is abbreviated WHMIS. The hazardous materials included here are all materials including chemicals and gases found in the workplace. This system is put in place for the prevention of injury and the protection of the environment. The way that people handling hazardous chemicals are kept safe is by teaching them how to handle and dispose of dangerous materials and how to read safety labels.

WHMIS is important for workers because it helps protect their health and the health of the workplace and safety of the environment. There are many different kinds of chemicals found in different workplaces. And these chemicals have different side effects. The reason why these chemicals have different handling requirements is because they damage that they can cause are also different. Knowing how to handle these materials is not the only thing involved in WHMIS. In this training employees will know how to avoid contact with chemicals and what to do if they are exposed to toxic chemicals which can cause respiratory and other health problems. This training also involves how to clean and dispose of materials in specific ways. With this training, employees will know how to keep out of danger and they will know what to do when they are faced with a potentially dangerous situation.

The basics across all WHMIS regulations remain the same. Dangerous materials are labelled. Continuous training on labels and potential hazards are regulated. Included in the WHMIS is the maintenance of the MSDS or material safety data sheet.

If a workplace contains or use products that have WHMIS symbols and labels, then their employees need to have training. Employees should be trained by their employers under federal regulations. If an employee is exposed to these materials and can come in contact with them, then he is required to undergo training. There is no need to undergo training if an employees work does not involve these hazards. Even new employees have to be trained despite already having a WHMIS training. This is because training is specific to the workplace.

The two parts of the WHMIS training are the general and the site-specific training. General training educates employees on labeling and symbols on hazardous materials. Employees need to know how to read the labels.

This general training can also be taken online. In this online training, employees are updated on WHMIS regulations and labels. Site-specific training is not covered online.

Training in your specific workplace is site-specific training. Here you will be taught what substances are there and how to handle them in your own specific workplace. Disposing of chemicals and how to deal with emergency situations are also taught.

With WHMIS training, you ensure the safety and well-preparedness of employees to perform their daily duties.
